Your billing system should talk to you
Shiftnet V27 is out, and its headline feature changes where you run your business from: your WiFi network now reports to your Telegram — every sale, every customer request, every router problem, and a full summary at the end of each day. Here is what shipped, and why we think every billing system should work this way.
A dashboard answers the questions you remember to ask. But most of what matters in a WiFi business happens while you are somewhere else — serving a customer, on a boda between sites, asleep. V27 closes that gap with the official @shiftnetalertsbot: link your Telegram once, and the platform starts telling you what's happening the moment it happens.
#01What lands in your chat
- Every sale, with the part that actually matters. The moment a customer pays by mobile money you get the buyer's name, the reference, the voucher code — and then the message updates itself: "✅ Connected (4s)" when they get online, or a warning if they paid and never connected, so you can SMS them the code before they walk away frustrated.
- Customer requests, instantly. WiFi-extension and Home Internet requests ping your chat the second they're submitted. The customer who asked is still holding their phone — that's the moment to win them.
- Site offline — verified, not noisy. If a branch router stops reporting, Shiftnet doesn't panic-text you on the first missed check-in. It waits for repeated silence, confirms beyond reasonable doubt, then tells you plainly: "Main branch router is offline — please check on it." And when it recovers: "back online — down for 22 min."
- Ethernet port alerts. A cable pulled out of a router at 11pm is no longer a mystery you discover at noon the next day.
- A daily summary at 23:59. Revenue, purchases, how many customers connected, and how many clients are online — branch by branch. Your books close themselves every night.
- Shiftnet updates. Platform announcements arrive in the same chat, so you hear about new features the day they ship.
Everything is opt-in per event — flip any of them off in Settings → Notifications. Your whole team can link their own chats with the same token, so the day shift and the night shift both know what's going on without sharing a login.
#02Why push beats polling — for humans too
Engineers learned this lesson long ago: systems that poll for changes are always late, and systems that get pushed events act in real time. Most billing systems still make the owner do the polling — log in, refresh, scan tables, log out. The information was there; you just weren't.
The cost of that gap is real and it compounds:
- A router that dies at 8pm on a busy Friday sells nothing until you happen to check. Every hour of silent downtime is revenue that simply never existed — and customers who bought elsewhere.
- A customer who paid but never connected is a refund argument tomorrow. The same customer, texted their code within a minute, is a happy regular.
- A service request answered in five minutes converts. The same request discovered three days later usually finds the customer already signed with someone else.
#03Why every billing system must have this
We'd go further than "nice feature". We think real-time notifications are table stakes for any system that touches your money, for four reasons:
- Trust is built on visibility. When every shilling that enters the system announces itself to your phone — with a name, a reference and an outcome — there is no room for doubt between you, your agents and your gateway. Reconciliation stops being a monthly argument and becomes a running fact.
- Infrastructure problems are money problems. In this business the network is the shop. A billing system that knows a site went quiet but doesn't tell you is watching your shop get locked and saying nothing.
- Speed is the product. Customers judge a WiFi provider by how fast things happen — how fast the voucher arrives, how fast someone responds, how fast the site comes back. You can only be fast about things you know about.
- Owners deserve to leave the desk. A system that requires you to sit in front of it to know your own business is holding you hostage. The whole point of good software is that the business runs — and reports — while you live your life.
#04Connect in four steps
- 1. Open Telegram and search @shiftnetalertsbot
- 2. Tap Start
- 3. In your dashboard, open Settings → Notifications and generate your notification token
- 4. Paste the token in the chat (you can add your WiFi name) — done. Alerts start immediately.
It's free for every Shiftnet provider, takes under a minute, and you can unlink any chat at any time with /unlink or from the dashboard.
#05What's next
V27 also ships instant withdrawals with live status, smarter voucher cards (new print templates, QR-code selling, agent names on every card), and a polished requests inbox. And the notification channel itself is just getting started — more alert types and more channels are on the roadmap. If there's a moment in your business you wish your phone had told you about, tell us — that's how this feature got built.
Your network reports itself now. You stay in control. Link your Telegram today — and if you're still running your WiFi business on spreadsheets and silence: shiftnet.africa is waiting.
